The French Riviera is a place that tends to create-for most-instant ingrained images of glamour and sun-soaked beaches as well as strolling along palm-decked promenades.
When planning a trip along this famous stretch of coast, however, one question always looms between the two: Nice or Cannes?

It was easy and chill the first moment I spent being in Nice. In fact, this city, which is the biggest in the French Riviera, has that peculiar coastal town charm.
Mixed with its Italian and French aesthetics, it lives old-fashioned but in a context without any airs, per se, or pretensions that you might expect from that corner of France.
The Beaches: Pebbles and a Whole Lot of Blue
This doesn't really mean soft sandy beaches as you will be surprised that Nice, of all cities, has pebbled beaches. Quite a shock, isn't it, for people who imagined powdery fine sand?
The lack of sand didn't bother me once I found my place, settled down, and gazed at the enchanting turquoise water.
And, of course, the famed stretch of Promenade des Anglais goes on and on for miles above which you could enjoy fantastic morning walks or crooning at a wonted sunset stroll.
You will need to spend some money for access to these beaches since most of them are private and have the sunbed and waiter service.
Meanwhile, there are many public areas where you can simply lay down your towel to bask in the Mediterranean sun.
The Old Town: A Colorful Maze of History
Nice's Old Town (Vieux Nice) came to be my favorite part of the city. Walking through its narrow, colorful lanes could easily be an experience to take you back in time.
The old ochre and pastel facades, the freshness of the lavender wafting from different stalls selling products, and the presence of inviting little cafes as one strolls made this a wonderful place to lose oneself in.
One morning, I bought some socca, which is nothing more than a crispy pancake of chickpeas that is a local specialty. I went and settled down in a lively square where I took time soaking in the aroma and just watching people pass by.
Moments like this one made me realize that Nice is genuine and real, not just a city for tourists.
Culture and Activities
For culture lovers and art buffs, Nice has so much to offer. While I was there, I never got bored in the Marc Chagall Museum and Matisse Museum as they displayed wonderful works of the two most famed artists from the region.
I also went hiking up Castle Hill (Colline du Château) for a panoramic view of the magnificently beautiful city and sea. Sunset is an edge for this adventure.
Cannes: Where the Glamour Meets the Sea
If Nice is effortlessly cool, then Cannes is the very definition of refined elegance.
The moment I stepped off the train, I felt the shift in atmosphere, there was an air of exclusivity, of high-end boutiques and designer sunglasses.
The Beaches: Sandy and Sophisticated
The pleasant surprise with Cannes, unlike Nice, was in its sandy beaches. Private beach clubs lining the shores offer bedding and cocktails to enjoy while watching yachts glide. For a traditional Riviera beach day, you must be in Cannes.
A small section of beach public, though, was Plage du Midi that was great for sunbathing in the free. But the truth is, this is Cannes, and so if you're here, you might as well take advantage of it-the beach clubs.

La Croisette: A Walk Amongst the Elite
The Boulevard de la Croisette in Cannes' own version of Nice's Promenade des Anglais-themed street, but much more glamorous. It is lined with luxury hotels such as the Carlton and Majestic, the most elite place to be seen and spotted.
For those not staying in a five-star hotel, a stroll along this boulevard makes it feel special.
One of my favourite things to do in Cannes was to sit at one of the beach bars, sipping a drink, watching the sun go down, and imagining what it would be like during the Cannes Film Festival when the city is taken over by scores of movie stars and filmmakers every May.
Old Town & Local Flavor
But even with the glitz and glamour Cannes has, there is an Old Town. Le Suquet charmingly escapes from the shiny high-priced luxury along the waterfront by being perched atop a hill.
Narrow winding streets lead up to an overlook with views of the city, while its restaurants feel a little more old school than those on the upscale Croisette.
So here I ate at a family-run restaurant, enjoying a simple yet delicious seafood dish while drowning in the far away sounds of waves. Luxury may be Cannes' forte, but there's still a bit of old-world charm if you know where to look for it.
So, What Can You Go For?
Well, that matters on the kind of trip you want to enjoy.
Choose Nice if you:
- Adore a good mix of antique milieu, culture, and relaxed seaside charms.
- Love to walk through atmospheric old towns.
- I Hope for a cheaper Riviera experience since Nice is generally cheaper than Cannes.
- Prefer an artsy, lived-in feel rather than a resort-like atmosphere.
Choose Cannes if you:
- Desire sandy beaches and a more luxurious coastal experience.
- Is into high-end shopping, glamorous bars, and upscale dining.
- Gets excited by the thought of walking where Hollywood stars have been during the Cannes Film Festival.
- Prefer a more compact, more polished city with quite a resort-like atmosphere.
Both Nice and Cannes have wonderful offerings from the French Riviera but are good for other types of travelers.
Nice feels like a living city, breathes life into locals, and is brimming over with history. Cannes is more about indulging, elegance, and finer things in life.
